How Has Technology Affected Interpersonal Communication And Romantic Attractions

in News Articles May 6, 2021 - 9:11 am 94 Views

In the 21st –century, innovations in technology affect so many aspects of our lives, making things more economical, and streamlined. We can swipe phones to pay for the items we buy, and use apps to control the appliances in our homes, even when we're elsewhere. But the area where it has had the most significant impact is in personal relationships. Upwards of one-third of today's couples claim to have met on a dating site, a statistic that is rising all the time. Here we assess the extent to which technology is driving romance.

Finding compatible individuals

Although online dating services have only been around for a couple of decades (since around the mid-1990s), they have evolved into vibrant resources catering to a variety of aspirations. No matter what your tastes might be in relationships – straight, gay, monogamous, polyamorous or local dating; short flirt or long-term partnerships – there will be a website perfect for your needs. When you register with your local dating service, in-built algorithms will ensure you find the most suitable matches, based on your location and the information you've provided.

Convenient communication

One of the most potent attributes of modern dating outlets is to do with communication. If you are eager to pursue someone whose profile has attracted you, there are so many ways to touch base. You can text, email, or message via WhatsApp groups. You can phone or video chat. There are also all sorts of methods of letting someone know you are romantically drawn to them. Websites will commonly provide features such as the ability to 'like' another user's profile, or simply to send them a 'wink' that will alert them they have an admirer. And once you've become a member of a site, the technology is available to utilize 24/7.

Issues with shorthand

Although these communication techniques are an invaluable method of developing a rapport, this needs to be tempered with the downside of such convenience. Because users are sending messages via texts, rather than composing love letters in longhand, there will always be a temptation to use slang, abbreviations, or to insert emojis. While this can enliven correspondence, it can also create an air of flippancy. A message containing a lot of shorthand can sometimes give the impression it has been rushed or isn't too sincere. Worse still, subtle humor or irony doesn't always translate well. You might pass a message on to someone and make a dry observation, only for the person on the receiving end to misinterpret your ambiguous tone. Technology is certainly fabulous in terms of saving time and providing a convenient platform for meaningful conversations, but it will never take the place of face-to-face chat.

Screen intrusion

Much as technology has invigorated relationships by providing streamlined matchmaking services, it isn't always positive. If you have set your mobile device to provide alerts every time someone send you a message on your favorite dating app, or when you receive regular notifications from your social media channels, this can lead to the temptation to constantly check for updates. While this can become intrusive at the best of times, it can be downright anti-social when you are otherwise engaged in social situations. Couples on dates should agree to desist from staring at their screens now and again, whether they are seated on opposite sites of a table in a restaurant or coffee shop, or they are unwinding in bed at night. After all, what incoming news from social media feeds could be more worthy of your attention than the loved one at your side?!
